Erst in den 1580er Jahren, zu Zeiten der Sforza, wurde die Wehrmauer angesichts der steigenden Expansionsbestrebungen der Konf\u00f6derierten deutlich verst\u00e4rkt und ausgebaut.<\/p>\n<p>Durch den Bau einer zweiten Mauer wurde die Wehrmauer verdoppelt und es entstanden die beiden heute noch sichtbaren Durchg\u00e4nge: ein \u00fcberdachter, etwa 4 m hoher Durchgang und ein \u00e4usserer, oberer Gang mit Zinnen und Maschendraht.<br \/>\nDie Wehrmauer diente nicht nur zur Verteidigung und \u00dcberwachung, sondern war mit ihrem Tor auch ein wichtiger Kontrollpunkt f\u00fcr Waren, die Bellinzona passierten und f\u00fcr andere M\u00e4rkte der Region bestimmt waren. Im 15. Jahrhundert hatte die Wehrmauer einen eigenen Kastellan, der &#8211; nicht immer erfolgreich &#8211; dar\u00fcber wachte, dass die Mauer nicht zu Kriegs- oder Schmuggelzwecken passiert wurde.<\/p>\n<p>Im Jahr 1489 wurde auf Befehl des Herzogs Ludovico Sforza eine Br\u00fccke &#8211; auch Ponte della Torretta genannt &#8211; errichtet. Diese sollte das Tal von Castel Grande bis zum rechten Ufer des Flusses Tessin abriegeln.
