Souvent appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0petit ch\u00e2teau\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0nouveau\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0interm\u00e9diaire\u00a0\u00bb, il fut baptis\u00e9 ch\u00e2teau de Schwyz en 1506 puis ch\u00e2teau de San Martino \u00e0 partir de 1818.<\/p>\n<p>Situ\u00e9 sur la colline de Montebello, \u00e0 environ 90 m\u00e8tres au-dessus de la ville, le manoir se compose d&rsquo;un noyau primitif &#8211; une enceinte irr\u00e9guli\u00e8re, l\u00e9g\u00e8rement oblongue, divis\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur par plusieurs murs &#8211; \u00e9rig\u00e9 \u00e0 la fin du XIIIe si\u00e8cle par la famille gibeline Rusca de C\u00f4me \u00e0 des fins r\u00e9sidentielles.<\/p>\n<p>En 1335, avec l&rsquo;av\u00e8nement de la domination des Visconti sur C\u00f4me, le ch\u00e2teau de Montebello devint \u00e9galement la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de la seigneurie milanaise, qui le renfor\u00e7a pour ses nouveaux besoins strat\u00e9gico-militaires. La forteresse \u00e9tait en effet prot\u00e9g\u00e9e par de hautes murailles couronn\u00e9es de merlons gibelins et dot\u00e9es de tours d&rsquo;angle. Sur le front oriental, cependant, il s&rsquo;av\u00e9ra n\u00e9cessaire de creuser un foss\u00e9 profond, au-dessus duquel fut plac\u00e9 un pont-levis en bois.<\/p>\n<p>Comme pour Castel Grande, les travaux d&rsquo;agrandissement et de consolidation entrepris dans la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XVe si\u00e8cle (1462-1490) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement importants pour le manoir de Montebello, et pr\u00e9voyaient notamment la construction d&rsquo;un second mur d&rsquo;enceinte, plus massif et plus solide, avec des tours arrondies. Un ravelin et de hauts murs furent \u00e9galement \u00e9rig\u00e9s sur le flanc est pour prot\u00e9ger le ch\u00e2teau contre les assaillants.<\/p>\n<p>Gard\u00e9 par au moins un ch\u00e2telain nomm\u00e9 par le duc, le ch\u00e2teau de Montebello doit donc \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel du syst\u00e8me d\u00e9fensif composite de Bellinzone., comme en t\u00e9moignent les deux prolongements de murailles qui partaient de la forteresse en forme de losange au nord et au sud et qui, avec Castel Grande, enfermaient le bourg m\u00e9di\u00e9val \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur d&rsquo;un p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre d\u00e9fensif.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=\u00a0\u00bb1\/3&Prime;
