Frankenstein, the author’s self-portrait – a new creation

By and with Margherita Saltamacchia

The birth of Mary Shelley (1797–1851) coincided with the death of another Mary, her mother Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797), an established radical writer and pioneer of feminism. From the very beginning, the themes of creation and death influenced the young author, who at the age of nineteen wrote ‘Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus’.
Mary Shelley was a widow in her early forties when she decided to tell her own story. To retrace the steps of her life that led her, at a very young age, to write the novel that would make her famous. These are seemingly insignificant steps. But they provide us with the key to understanding her work.
This show is a journey through the thoughts and questions that accompanied Mary Shelley, defining her as one of the most emblematic authors of her time. Critics describe it as ‘an intense and personal reinterpretation’ of Mary Shelley’s masterpiece, ‘a production with meticulous attention to detail, capable of winning over the audience and making them fall in love with Frankenstein’.
