Dressing up the Cinema

For its 35th anniversary, Castellinaria celebrates the profession of the costume designer by exhibiting, in the Sala dell’Arsenale of Castelgrande in Bellinzona, a number of stage dresses made by Sartoria Tirelli-Trappetti of Rome.
Founded in 1964, Sartoria Tirelli-Trapetti has created costumes for famous films and shows, for directors of the likes of Luchino Visconti and Federico Fellini. The list of costumes created, collaborations, and awards received for the most important films in the history of international cinema is so long that we will mention only a few, such as: the costumes for Amadeus by Milos Forman, for which the designer Teodor Pistek won an Oscar in 1985; those for The Age of Innocence, which earned the costume designer Gabriella Pescucci an Oscar in 1994; the Oscar for the costume designer for The English Patient, Ann Roth, in 1997; the costumes for Golden Door designed by Mariano Tufano; those for The Passion of Christ, Napoleon and Me, and Cold Mountain, designed by Ann Roth.

THE CLOTHES ON DISPLAY
The evening gown worn by Winona Ryder (May Welland) in the film The Age of Innocence by Martin Scorsese, created by Gabriella Pescucci, who won an Oscar for this film. From The Brothers Grimm by Terry Gilliam, we can admire the sumptuous dress worn by the evil queen played by Monica Bellucci and the metal armour worn by Jack Grimm (Heath Ledger) during the hunt for the magical creatures of the forest. Costume designer Gabriella Pescucci.
For the TV series, we chose the hugely successful Vikings, with 6 seasons and a sequel that began in 2022. On display is the medieval tunic worn by Tori, in coarse fabric reminiscent of the hand-made fabrics of the era.
